Wild marjoram (Origanum vulgare) is a native perennial. In the kitchen its leaves are called oregano. The fragrant clump grows 30 centimetres to a metre tall. From July to September, flat clusters of tiny pink to purple-red flowers open on top. The plant wants sun and soil where rainwater drains away well.

## How do you recognise wild marjoram?

Start with the leaves. They are small and egg-shaped, 1 to 2 centimetres long. The leaves grow in opposite pairs, each pair set crosswise on the pair below. Short hairs cover them, and they are often tinged red. The whole plant has a fine, herby scent.

At the top of the straight, hairy stems are broad, branched, flat clusters. Each one is made up of many small lipped flowers, 4 to 7 millimetres long. The stamens stick far out of each flower. Below the flowers are dark purple bracts, small leaves that make the colour deeper still.

Two plants look similar. The garden form 'Aureum' is the same species, but with golden-yellow leaves. Sweet marjoram has soft, pale green leaves and small white flowers. Outdoors, that species does not always survive the winter.

## Where does wild marjoram grow best?

Full sun is best: more than six hours of direct sun a day around midsummer. Partial shade, with three to six hours, suits wild marjoram too. Sand, loam and chalk all suit it. Acid or neutral soil is fine as well. Even poor soil will do, because the plant needs no feeding.

> **Did you know?**
>
> Out in nature, wild marjoram is a sign of lime. Wherever the plant grows wild, the soil contains lime.

In a garden, two spots cause trouble:

- **Heavy or wet soil, where water lies after a shower.** The roots then rot, especially in winter. In such a spot, grow the plant in a raised bed.
- **A pot with no holes in the bottom.** The water cannot drain out, and the roots drown.

In autumn the leaves die back. The dry, brown stems stay upright all winter.

Over time a clump can grow a metre wide. You can check whether that metre fits your border on a plan of your own plot. The app draws the plot to scale, with the houses around it.

## Planting and caring for wild marjoram

Wild marjoram is on sale in pots all year round. Late spring is the best time to plant, because the plant then settles in quickly.

For a solid patch, space the plants about 30 centimetres apart. That comes to 8 to 11 plants per square metre. On planting day there is still a lot of bare soil between them. After a few years the gaps close, because the clumps grow into each other.

Water a new plant in dry weeks. Once it is established in open ground, no extra water is needed.

| When | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| Early spring | Cut off the old, flowered stems |
| Late spring | Trim lightly for a compact clump, and remove dead stems |
| Spring or late summer | Dig up a large clump and divide it |

Many bird species breed from March through July, and many go on into August. In those months, look inside the clump before you cut.

## What goes wrong with wild marjoram?

**The shoot tips are stuck together with fine webbing, with tiny black pellets in it.** The caterpillars of the mint moth are feeding there. They rarely do much damage, so you can leave them. Cut back a badly affected shoot, and it will grow again.

**Dusty orange pustules appear on the stems and leaves.** That is mint rust, a fungal disease. Remove an affected plant promptly, before black spores form on it.

**The plant hardly flowers.** The flowers sit at the top of the stems. If you keep harvesting the tips for the kitchen, you cut the flowers off with them. Leave part of the clump alone if you want flowers.

## Which insects and birds use wild marjoram?

The caterpillars of the mint moth (Pyrausta aurata) live on mints and also on wild marjoram. This small moth has purple-burgundy wings with yellow spots. It is a very common species, and gardens are where you mostly see it.

The caterpillar of the Lewes wave (Scopula immorata) also feeds on thyme and wild marjoram. In the Netherlands this moth is very rare.

No bird is described by name as using wild marjoram itself.

## Is wild marjoram poisonous or edible?

As far as is known, wild marjoram is not poisonous. The leaves are edible and, as oregano, a well-known kitchen herb. They are mostly used dried rather than fresh. The taste is sharper than that of sweet marjoram, and at its best just before the flowers open.
